Dede Creates a Buzz: Adult Learner Case Study

April 28th, 2021 | 1 min read

By Kate Greenall

The Create a Buzz project was launched by Age UK Cheshire in partnership with the award winning Foden's Band to help tackle social isolation and loneliness amongst older people through learning to play a musical instrument.

Dede Simkins, one of the participants talks about her experience playing the cornet with the project.

"I have received top class group tuition in a relaxed, friendly and encouraging way at the age concern centre, and throughout Covid on Zoom. Meeting up together with a group of people of different ages, musical skills and backgrounds has been enriching. Enjoying a coffee and a chat together each week helps relieve the nerves of meeting and playing in a small group."

"When I first took up playing, I had to borrow an instrument from a band as I did not own one, and after 3 months I invested in my own. I wish I had known of pInstruments then as having tried one at 'creating a buzz', it would have been ideal to learn on and would have taken me forward for a year or so before buying a brass one. I can fully recommend the whole experience of the project."

Age UK Cheshire The project continues and anyone over the age of 50, irrespective of musical experience is encouraged to join the group for their weekly sessions at the Castle Community Centre, Northwich. If you are interested in taking part, email brian.roberts@ageukcheshire.org.uk
