This case study from 2020 explores In2, a project in Durham aiming to help children moving between primary and secondary school.

In2 is a three-year project using sports and the arts to help children with the transition between primary and secondary school. The project received funding at the end of last year to deliver some music workshops as part of the initiative. Here Kate James, In2 project manager shares an update on how they have been getting on!

"We’ve been working with 103 year 6 pupils from four primary schools in Darlington since October 2019.  So far they have enjoyed everything from theatre trips to performance workshops, as well as creative sessions with ‘Little Inventors’ and a visit to an indoor scooter and BMX park.

The plan is to hopefully continue activities across the summer holidays and into year 7, their first in secondary school.  Our aim is that, by year 8, the children will have identified a sporting or cultural activity that they really enjoy and then we can help them build activity into their everyday lives.  This way the project will have a ‘life’ after three years.  We’re also undertaking teacher CPD to leave a legacy in the schools for future pupils.

Thanks to a grant from Durham University and sponsorship from Warwick Music Group, we’ve been able to deliver a seven-week music programme as part of the wider project.  The wonderful Back Chat Brass delivered workshops in each school, which built towards a final performance for peers, parents and staff.

We’ve also managed to purchase some instruments to leave in the schools and, whilst we couldn’t deliver the teacher training session before the schools shut down, we are plotting to perhaps create a film and to deliver some virtual teaching.  Not even COVID-19 can silence those pBones, pTrumpets, pCornets and pBuzz!"
