10 Fun Sound Facts

  1. There is no sound in space because there is nothing for the sound waves to bounce off.

  2. An echo is produced when the sound waves are bounced off of an object, rather than being absorbed.

  3. The loudest natural sound on Earth is a volcano erupting.

  4. Thunder is the sound produced by the rapid heating of air by a lightning strike.

  5. The sound of a whip cracking is made when the whip is travelling faster than the speed of sound.

  6. Hot and cold water make different noises.

  7. Sound travels 4 times faster in water than it does in air.

  8. Dogs hear higher-pitched sounds than people so they can hear some sounds that are so high, people can not even hear them.

  9. Dolphins can hear sounds underwater from as far as 15 miles away.

  10. Whale voices can travel up to 479 miles through the ocean's water so they can communicate with each other across huge distances.
